Malayalam actress Navya Nair recently faced an unexpected penalty during her trip to Australia, where she was attending Onam celebrations organized by the Malayali Association of Victoria. Upon arrival at Melbourne Airport, officials discovered a 15-centimeter jasmine gajra in her handbag, which led to a fine of AUD 1,980, approximately Rs 1.15 lakh.

The actress explained that her father had given her the jasmine flowers before her journey, instructing her to wear one part from Kochi to Singapore and keep the other in her handbag for the onward flight. Unaware of Australia’s strict biosecurity laws, Navya Nair unintentionally broke the rules. “What I did was against the law. It was a mistake I made unknowingly. However, ignorance is no excuse,” she acknowledged, accepting full responsibility for her actions.

This incident highlights Australia’s stringent biosecurity regulations, designed to protect the country’s unique ecosystem from pests and diseases. Fresh flowers, fruits, vegetables, and plant products can carry hidden risks, making it crucial for travelers to familiarize themselves with local laws. The Australian Government’s Department of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Forestry emphasizes the importance of declaring all plant material and animal items upon arrival.

Despite the hefty fine, Navya Nair handled the situation with humor and grace, sharing her experience on social media.
