Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has taken a groundbreaking step in the engineering and construction industry by introducing a one-day menstrual leave policy for its women employees. Chairman S. N. Subrahmanyan made the announcement during Women’s Day celebrations at the company’s Powai office in Mumbai, addressing an audience of 350 women employees. This progressive policy aims to provide greater flexibility and support to the women workforce, which constitutes approximately 9% of L&T’s 60,000-strong employee base.
While the initiative applies to L&T’s core construction and engineering businesses, it excludes the company’s financial and technology services divisions, where employees already benefit from work-from-home and flexible work arrangements. By implementing menstrual leave, L&T sets a precedent in an industry known for its demanding work schedules and on-site operations.
The announcement comes in the wake of Subrahmanyan’s earlier remarks advocating a 90-hour work week, which sparked debate across corporate circles. His recent move, however, signals an effort toward inclusivity and well-being within L&T’s workforce. The initiative reinforces the company’s commitment to progressive workplace policies, recognizing the need for gender-sensitive reforms in traditionally male-dominated industries.
