India’s Data Centre Revolution: Building the Digital Infrastructure Powerhouse for Cloud Computing and AI Innovation

India is undergoing an unprecedented data centre expansion as the nation transforms into a global digital infrastructure hub, positioning itself at the forefront of cloud computing and artificial intelligence innovation. At the India AI Impact Summit 2026, several global and domestic technology firms announced substantial investments in AI infrastructure, computing systems, and data centre development, with over US$ 250 billion in investments across these sectors announced collectively.

The scale of this expansion reflects India’s strategic emergence as a critical digital economy. India’s data centre industry is witnessing a sharp expansion phase, with installed capacity expected to grow more than fourfold by 2030, according to a report published by Rubix Data Sciences. The sector’s installed capacity is projected to increase from 1.5 GW in 2025 to 6.5 GW by 2030, according to the report, which said that India added 387 MW of IT capacity in 2025, more than double the 191 MW added in 2024.

As of January 2026, India had 271 data centres, with Mumbai, Hyderabad, Delhi NCR, Bengaluru, and Chennai together accounting for nearly 65 per cent of the country’s facilities. In June last year, India ranked seventh globally by the number of data centre facilities. This geographic concentration creates competitive regional innovation ecosystems while simultaneously fragmenting growth across multiple entrepreneurial hubs.

Massive investment commitments from global hyperscalers underscore confidence in India’s data centre ecosystem. Microsoft followed recent announcements with plans to invest $17.5 billion by 2029 to expand its AI and cloud footprint, funding new data centers, infrastructure, and training programs. Amazon has also stepped up its spending, saying it would invest an additional $35 billion in India by 2030, taking its total planned commitment to about $75 billion as it expands its retail and cloud operations.

Digital Connexion, a joint venture backed by Reliance Industries, Brookfield Asset Management, and Digital Realty Trust, said it would invest $11 billion by 2030 to develop a 1-gigawatt, AI-focused data center campus in the southern state of Andhra Pradesh. The project, spanning about 400 acres in Visakhapatnam, is among the largest announced in India and underscores growing interest from both domestic and global investors in building AI-ready infrastructure in the country. Separately, Adani Group said it plans to invest up to $5 billion alongside Google in its AI data center project in the country.

These investments reflect profound recognition of India’s competitive advantages. Construction costs for data centres in India are estimated to be 30-40 per cent lower than in China and the US. This cost advantage, combined with India’s massive software talent pool and growing consumer digital adoption, positions the nation as an attractive alternative to saturated markets.

The expansion addresses accelerating demand from multiple sources. The rapid expansion of data centres in India would be driven by a rise in demand from cloud computing, AI workloads and digital services such as 5G, e-commerce, UPI and OTT platforms, alongside India’s cost advantage. India’s thriving fintech ecosystem, e-commerce explosion, and digital payment infrastructure create organic demand growth for data processing and storage capacity.

However, execution challenges threaten ambitious capacity projections. Scaling up data center capacity in India may prove difficult, as patchy power availability, high electricity costs, and water scarcity pose key constraints for energy-intensive AI workloads. Those challenges could slow construction and raise operating costs for cloud providers. Power consumption represents approximately fifty percent of data centre operating costs, making energy infrastructure critical to project viability.

Between March 2025 and April 2026, operators announced roughly 30 large projects across the country, collectively adding about 3.5 GW of planned capacity. Andhra Pradesh and Telangana alone account for over 2 GW, driven by AI-centric mega campuses in Visakhapatnam and Hyderabad. Maharashtra remains the deepest and most competitive market by project count, while Chennai and Noida continue to attract hyperscale and enterprise-led buildouts.

Government support provides essential backing for this infrastructure transformation. Budget 2026 explicitly positions data centres alongside traditional infrastructure sectors including roads, power, and logistics, signaling comprehensive policy commitment. Investment in digital infrastructure is poised for unprecedented growth, with investment commitments in the data center industry expected to exceed $100 billion by 2027, as per CBRE.

As India constructs the digital infrastructure foundation enabling cloud computing and artificial intelligence innovation, the nation’s data centre revolution represents not merely technological advancement but fundamental economic restructuring positioning India as a critical global digital hub.
