A routine journey turned into a catastrophic nightmare on the Jaisalmer-Jodhpur highway on Tuesday, when a private sleeper bus was suddenly engulfed in a raging inferno, resulting in the tragic deaths of twenty passengers and critically injuring sixteen others. The Jodhpur-bound bus, reportedly carrying 57 passengers, burst into flames barely ten minutes after its departure from Jaisalmer, near the Thaiyat village.
Preliminary investigations strongly suggest that the high casualty count was a direct result of the vehicle’s mechanical failure, specifically a suspected short circuit in the air-conditioning system. This spark is believed to have ignited flammable materials inside the cabin, trapping the occupants. Compounding the tragedy, police reports indicate that the intense heat caused the main door to jam, preventing mass evacuation, with many of the deceased’s bodies tragically found piled up near the blocked exit.
Local villagers, passers-by, and nearby Army personnel were the first responders, mounting a heroic, yet desperate, rescue effort to pull passengers out, often through broken windows. The critically injured were immediately rushed to Jaisalmer before being referred to hospitals in Jodhpur for advanced treatment. Authorities have since confirmed that one of the injured succumbed to their burns, raising the death toll, and a painstaking process of DNA sampling is now underway to identify the victims, many of whom were charred beyond recognition.
The horrific incident has prompted profound grief and concern from national leaders, with both the Prime Minister and Chief Minister announcing financial aid and directing a thorough investigation into the bus’s safety compliance. The focus of the probe will now center on the vehicle’s recent modifications and the alleged lack of an adequate emergency exit system, with authorities vowing strict action against any negligence found responsible for this unbearable loss of life.
