In a groundbreaking move for cross-cultural cinema, the critically acclaimed Malayalam thriller Drishyam, starring Mohanlal, is getting a Korean remake. This untitled project, which was first announced at the Cannes Film Festival in 2023, marks a significant collaboration between India’s Panorama Studios and Korea-based Anthology Studios, a production house co-founded by acclaimed director Kim Jee-woon and actor Song Kang-ho.
The most intriguing detail to emerge is the announcement of a female director, Deok Roh, to helm the project. Roh is a talented filmmaker with a diverse body of work that spans various genres. She made her directorial debut in 2013 with the romantic comedy Very Ordinary Couple, and has since showcased her versatility with the darkly comic thriller The Exclusive: Beat the Devil’s Tattoo and the Netflix sci-fi series Glitch. Her previous experience remaking the Spanish film The Hidden Face positions her as a unique and experienced choice for this project. With production slated to begin next year, this collaboration promises to blend the gripping narrative of Drishyam with the distinct style and craftsmanship of Korean cinema.
