The number of suspected cases of Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) has surged to 130 in Pune and several other districts of Maharashtra, according to health department officials. The rare neurological disorder, which affects the peripheral nervous system and can lead to muscle weakness or paralysis, has raised concerns among medical experts and health authorities.

GBS is often triggered by infections, with symptoms typically starting with weakness and tingling in the extremities before progressing to more severe complications. In response to the increasing number of cases, health authorities have intensified surveillance and diagnostic efforts to ensure timely intervention. Hospitals have been advised to stay on high alert and prioritize early detection and treatment to prevent complications.

While GBS remains a rare condition, the rise in suspected cases has prompted experts to examine potential causes, including environmental and viral factors. Public health officials are also closely monitoring patterns of infection to determine whether a specific outbreak or underlying trigger is contributing to the spike.

The Maharashtra health department has urged people experiencing early symptoms such as weakness, numbness, or difficulty in movement to seek immediate medical attention. Efforts are underway to strengthen healthcare response mechanisms and provide necessary treatment to those affected.
