India’s Strategic Cartographic Counter: Officially Recording 27 Arunachal Pradesh Sites as China Intensifies Map Wars

The Government of India took a historic decision on August 7, 2026, to officially record 27 significant locations and geographical features of Arunachal Pradesh on Survey of India maps using their standard Indian names, responding directly to China’s policy of assigning fictitious Chinese names to Indian territories. This administrative action, while appearing procedural, carries profound strategic and diplomatic implications within India’s broader territorial assertion strategy.

The 27 entries include 21 land areas including Longju, Maja, Bisa, Bara Kundun, Chhota Kundun, Dhan Bari, Pritnagar, Buddhamandir, Jairampur, Teritnagar, Ramnagar, Jaswant Garh, Sagar, Padma, Jyotinagar, Baisakhi, Chhota Ropuk, Bara Ropuk, Shivaji Nagar, Sunpura and Kamlang Nagar. Four mountain passes have also been included: Dzo La, Riza La, Pukur La and Thag La. Sambho Sarovar has been identified as the lone lake on the list, while the Sher-e-Thapa Memorial is the sole monument.

China’s policy extends beyond mere renaming, constituting part of its broader “Three Warfares” doctrine, which seeks to influence international public opinion through legal warfare, psychological warfare and media warfare. The objective is to create an environment where claims can be legitimized in the future by repeatedly asserting them over a territory, marking fictitious names on maps and increasing their usage in official documents.

The timing proves particularly significant. The move precedes the upcoming BRICS Summit in New Delhi, where Chinese President Xi Jinping is expected to be present, while the development follows reports alleging Chinese incursions along the Line of Actual Control. Chief Minister Pema Khandu and the Indian Army have rejected Chinese incursion reports, with officials asserting that China does not dare cross Indian territory.

The Union Home Ministry stated that identifying these places formally on Survey of India maps is aimed at facilitating their accurate recognition and better awareness among the public at large, providing institutional basis for India’s territorial assertions. The cartographic counter-strategy exemplifies how modern geopolitical competition extends into seemingly technical domains where sovereignty assertions require both administrative precision and strategic messaging.
